I've long found the horizontal aspect of film a bit of a shock, as I'm so used to the portrait orientation of my photographs.

Plaything is the result of my frustrations and originally intended as a very brief short to see if a vertical film would work. As ever though, I became carried away with things, resulting in the final result here.

Filmed in the winter of 2011 in a cold North London basement over two days, the spider mites in the carpet feasted royally on poor Kate.

I have sampled the Dolls Song from the Tales of Hoffmann opera in the soundtrack, which involves the sorry tale of impossible love for an automaton and was cited as Hans Bellmer as an influence on his doll creation.
